Thunderstorm at Canewdon and Paglesham

Whilst researching the Essex Chronicle I spotted the following article in the paper of 5th September 1890 and thought it may be of interest.

About 11pm on 28th August a terrific thunderstorm passed over Canewdon and Paglesham. Canewdon Church was struck by lightning and the north-east corner stone was removed. Some of it lodged on the tower and other portions fell onto the roof of the church damaging the tiles.

At Church Hall farm, Paglesham, a haystack containing 50 loads of meadow hay and 10 loads of clover was also struck and set on fire. The Southend Fire Brigade attended with their engine and after several hours work succeeded in saving half of the hay. Half of the helpers at the engine were women. The stack was owned by W. T. Meeson of Rochford and insured in the Norwich Union Office."
