At one time, the River Crouch was called the Hull. The river could be crossed on foot at very low tide over a causeway of stones and shingle. A bridge was built over the river in 1549 and in 1646, it was replaced by a ferry. The ferry closed in 1948. The parish of Hullbridge has 2 miles of waterfront.
