When a soldier married the Rector's daughter

On Friday, 8th August 1913, The Southend and Westcliff GRAPHIC (The Journal with the most influential circulation in South-East Essex. Vol. VI. No. 319. Price, one Penny) featured a rare picture event, a Stambridge society wedding. Just look at those fashions. This is what the caption explained:

Picturesque Wedding at Stambridge . The marriage of Lieut.-Col. Charles Oswald Smeaton, R.A., and Miss Evelyn Marion Rashleigh Burnside, only child of the Rev. F.R. and Mrs. Burnside, of Great Stambridge Rectory, took place at Stambridge Church on the 29th ult. (“Graphic” photos.)

P.S. An advert on the cover of that edition of the ‘Westcliff Graphic’ announced the latest cinematic event: ‘The World’s Greatest Picture’ playing at the Warrior Square Picture Theatre, Southend-on-Sea: QUO VADIS (Whither Goest Thou?) Adults 3d. Children 2d. Reserved Seats 6d.)

I was fascinated to come across this, as Evelyn Smeaton was my next door neighbour in Thorpe Bay from 1960 until her death in the early 80's at age 96. She was a remarkable woman, who bought herself a piano for her 80th birthday. Her late husband's coat, golf clubs and sword were still hung in the hallway until her death.
