This is a photo of my late Grandfather Albert Edward Cottis c1910 standing at the old Creeksea signal post. The timbered building is the old Greyhound Inn. I was told that he was for a while, Ferryman between Burnham and Wallasea. He was born 1889.

Obviously, this photo was taken on the north side of the River Crouch, so not strictly in the Rochford district.

There is a much re-built property on the site of the Greyhound. I think it closed as a pub in about 1855!

There was also a lime kiln just off to the right of the photos that went out of use in the 1880’s and an associated wharf partly projecting out into the river, that in part survives today in use as an edge to the road.

The slipway for the ferry moved several times over the years, probably because of being washed away and re-built more than once, the present concrete yacht club slipway that dates to during or after WW2 is further to the west by at least 50 yards and at a different angle to the old ferry slipway.
