Wallasea

General information About Wallasea (this link has yet to be sorted out)

The area known as Wallasea Island is not really an island but a peninsula. This land was reclaimed from the sea in the Middle Ages to be used as sheep grazing, at a time when there were twice as many sheep as people in England. The reclaimed land was divided between other parishes in the Rochford Hundred and still is part of several other parishes. There is now a large nature reserve covering most of the Island which is managed by the RSPB mainly as a refuge for migrating species of wildfowl.
